President Obama and DHS Secretary Attend Hurricane Preparedness Briefing at FEMA

May 29, 2009 -- President Barack Obama and Department of Homeland Security Secretary (DHS) Janet Napolitano today attended briefings at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on the nation's preparedness for the 2009 Hurricane Season beginning June 1.

The meeting began with a briefing by FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate about the 2009 Hurricane predictions; federal disaster assistance programs; temporary housing; commodity distribution plans; and state and local emergency planning and coordination. The discussion also included new plans and technologies FEMA has for the upcoming hurricane season.

"With the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season beginning June 1, the national emergency response team continues to work together to make sure that our partners and the American people are as prepared as possible," said Craig Fugate, FEMA Administrator.

"The work we do to prepare before a hurricane strikes lays the groundwork for a successful response and recovery, and we urge every American living in a hurricane prone area to make the preparations needed keep their families safe. Today's briefing allowed President Obama and Secretary Napolitano to hear first hand our plans and preparations to support the national emergency response team during hurricane season, and how we are continuing to work closely with our state and local partners."
