CT Governor Rell: CDC Confirms Ten More Cases of Novel H1N1 Flu in Connecticut

All Cases Mild; Individuals Have or Are Recovering

May 8, 2009 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed ten new cases of novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) among Connecticut residents.

Positive confirmation results for H1N1 flu were received by the Department of Public Health from the CDC for six Fairfield residents as well as residents of North Granby, Wethersfield and Glastonbury. A case was also received from the Public Health Laboratory in Massachusetts, which conducted the confirmation test on a Manchester resident who was treated in that state. All of the individuals are recovering and did not require hospitalization.

These cases bring the total number of confirmed cases of novel H1N1 flu in Connecticut to fourteen.

“As we have said, we expect to receive additional cases of H1N1 flu in Connecticut and across the country,” Governor Rell said. “The good news is that the illnesses we are seeing are relatively mild and do not require hospitalization.”

“The Department of Public Health will continue to monitor for additional cases,” the Governor said. “We continue to encourage people to take simple, common sense precautions to protect themselves and prevent the spread of the flu. People with flu-like symptoms should call their doctor.”

The state Department of Public Health is continuing to urge residents to take precautions to prevent getting the flu or spreading it by staying home from work or school if they are sick, washing their hands frequently, and coughing or sneezing into their sleeve or a tissue.
