May 05, 2009 -- MADISON – Wisconsin Governor Doyle today announced that Wisconsin is receiving more than $587 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for education. Wisconsin will be eligible to apply for another $289 million this fall from the ARRA State Stabilization Fund.

“As a strong proponent for education funding in the ARRA, I am especially pleased that the Obama Administration, through this funding, rightly recognizes that we cannot let education deteriorate during the current economic crisis, Governor Doyle said. “I did not get elected governor to stand by and watch education in this state collapse. This new funding will help Wisconsin keep our teachers in classrooms. Without these resources, we would have had to make major cuts to education. The education we provide now will be the strength of our state and nation for decades to come. We all need to pull together and make sure kids have the best education possible.”

Last December, Governor Doyle testified before the House Appropriations Committee regarding the impact the national recession was having on Wisconsin schools and other essential local services. Governor Doyle thanked House Appropriations Chairman Dave Obey (WI-7) for his work to include education funding in the ARRA.
