New York Governor Paterson Announces The Resignation Of New York Power Authority President Roger Kelley
June 15, 2008 -- New York Governor David A. Paterson today announced that Roger Kelley has submitted his resignation as president of the New York Power Authority.
“Roger Kelley has served the state commendably, leading the Power Authority toward significant accomplishments that will positively impact energy policy into the future,” said Governor Paterson. “His record demonstrates both his vision for reducing our dependence on oil with renewable energy and energy efficiency projects and his commitment to protecting the environment with clean energy and conservation efforts.”
During his tenure at the Power Authority, NYPA reached a major agreement last winter with Alcoa, Inc., the world’s leading producer of primary and fabricated aluminum. This agreement was instrumental in retaining the North Country’s largest employer for at least another 30 years, and resulted in a commitment by Alcoa to invest approximately $600 million for a major overhaul of its Massena East smelter and retain approximately 1,065 jobs. The company also committed to funding a $10 million “North Country Economic Development Fund.”
Under Mr. Kelley’s leadership, NYPA has played a critical role in helping to revitalize the state economy. Through Mr. Kelley, NYPA’s various statewide economic development programs helped retain at least 375,000 jobs. Through the allocation of NYPA hydropower, his efforts also led to the creation of 1,700 jobs at 21 companies in Western New York and spurred capital investments of about $640 million.
As President of NYPA, Mr. Kelley’s achievements in energy efficiency have been exemplary. Over the past year, NYPA has invested more than $98 million in energy efficiency projects throughout the state. Likewise, he committed the Power Authority to investing a total of $1.4 billion in energy efficiency projects in just the next seven years, exceeding the Power Authority’s total for the past two decades.
The Governor noted that Mr. Kelley will be nominated to serve on the board of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
Governor Paterson added: “I want to thank Roger for his service to the people of the state and look forward to working with him in the future on developing the state’s energy policy.”
Roger Kelley said: “I am proud of all our accomplishment over the past year at the Power Authority. We have made great strides in addressing the state’s emerging energy issues and establishing a strong environmental record. I want to thank Governor Paterson for the opportunity to serve the people of the state and to advance initiatives that will impact energy policy into the future.”
Mr. Kelley’s resignation will be effective August 1, 2008.
