Federal Disaster Assistance Coming

May 28, 2008 -- LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe today signed the latest disaster-relief agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to make federal individual-assistance funds available to storm victims in Arkansas and Phillips Counties. On the night of May 10, an EF3 tornado struck Stuttgart in Arkansas County and straight-line winds did significant damage in Phillips County. In addition to individual assistance for storm victims, Arkansas County is also qualified for public assistance to help cover the costs of rebuilding infrastructure in and around Stuttgart.

This latest federal declaration means that Arkansas has no more pending requests before FEMA. Starting with the tornadoes of February 5, FEMA has responded to five rounds of severe weather in Arkansas, including four tornado outbreaks and sustained flooding.

"I thank FEMA for continuing to respond during this unprecedented weather season in Arkansas," Beebe said. "In addition, our Arkansas Department of Emergency Management has been on the front lines -- from the initial response to ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it. A lot of sleep has been lost, but a lot of grateful Arkansans have been helped when they needed it most."

ADEM is now coordinating with FEMA to establish locations for Disaster Response Centers in Arkansas and Phillips Counties.

Arkansas 2-1-1 stands ready to help storm victims who need information about disaster services, as well as Arkansans who wish to volunteer or to provide help. The call to 2-1-1 is free.
