North Carolina Governor Easley Proclaims Memorial Day 2008, Orders State Flags To Half Staff

North Carolinians Urged To Remember Sacrifices Of Those Who Died Serving The Nation

5/23/2008 -- Raleigh - North Carolina Governor Mike Easley today declared Monday, May 26 as Memorial Day 2008 in North Carolina. Easley directed that state flags be flown at half staff on Memorial Day at all state facilities. He urged citizens to honor the men and women of the armed services who died in service to the nation.

“As a state with a proud military presence and tradition, we are grateful on Memorial Day and every day for all that our service men and women do to protect our nation,” Easley said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the six members of the North Carolina National Guard we have lost in the past two months and the many others who have lost loved ones serving in the armed forces. We are in great debt to the military families who make so many sacrifices for our country.”

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Americans have observed Memorial Day since May 1868 to honor the sacrifices of the brave men and women who gave their lives in defense of our great nation; and

WHEREAS, since that time, brave men and women have answered our Nation’s call to duty and defended freedom at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS, these men and women have served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force with heroism, determination and valor; and

WHEREAS, soldiers, sailors and airmen based in North Carolina and serving in the North Carolina National Guard are among the United Forces who have served and are serving with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, this year alone, six members of the North Carolina National Guard have been killed in combat in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Memorial Day is a special day when Americans rededicate themselves to the principles upon which our nation was founded, and men and women in the Armed Forces have died defending; and

WHEREAS, Memorial Day offers each of us the opportunity to honor loved ones and remind ourselves of the ideals that are the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy and endure because of dedication and sacrifice of those who answered the nation’s call;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim Monday, May 26, 2008, as “MEMORIAL DAY” in North Carolina and urge all citizens to join me in honoring the men and women who died at service to our nation in war to preserve our freedom, and honor those families who endured the sorrow of a loved one making the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the United States of America.
