Students Recognized for Creativity and Skill in Energy Education Event
May 10, 2008 -- Eighty-eight teams from 29 Colorado schools participated in today’s Junior Solar Sprint and Hydrogen Fuel Cell car competitions hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
Teams used either a solar cell and motor or a fuel cell and motor to design and build solar or hydrogen powered vehicles.
Trophies for the fastest solar-powered model cars were given toColorado students from Bell Middle School (Golden), “Whipsaw,” first place; Bell Middle School (Golden), “Flying Turtle,” second place; and Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “No Frills Fred,” third place. Three solar design trophies based on technology, craftsmanship and innovation were given to teams from Van Arsdale Elementary (Arvada), “Car #71,” first place; Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “Car # 86,” second place; and Berry Creek Middle School (Edwards), “Car # 11,” third place.
Three trophies for the fastest hydrogen fuel cell cars were given to teams from Manning Middle School (Golden), “XLR8,” first place; Logan School for Creative Learning (Denver), “Car # 34,” second place; and Bell Middle School (Golden), “Car # 6,” third place. Three hydrogen fuel cell design trophies based on technology, craftsmanship and innovation were given to teams from Fitzsimmons Middle School (Bailey), “Car #26,” first place; Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “Car #87,” second place; and Colorado Virtual Academy (Northglenn), “Car #17,” third place.
Students from Grand Valley Science Club, (Parachute), “Aqua Herbie,” were awarded the Spirit Award for exhibiting good sportsmanship, including fairness and respectful behavior.
NREL's Junior Solar Sprint and Hydrogen Fuel Cell car competitions are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Xcel Energy Foundation, General Motors, Jefferson County Public Schools, Dakota Ridge High School, Midwest Research Institute/Battelle and NREL.
