Colorado Governor Ritter Issues Flag-Lowering Orders

May 8, 2008 -- By the authority vested in the Governor of the State of Colorado, under Article IV, Section 2 of the Colorado Constitution, Governor Bill Ritter today has ordered that flags be lowered to half-staff to mark the following occasions on the following dates:

1. Gov. Ritter has granted a request from the City of Colorado Springs to lower U.S. and Colorado flags on state buildings within the City of Colorado Springs on Friday, May 9, 2008, in observance of the funeral of former Mayor Bob Isaac. Isaac, 80, passed away Friday, May 2. He served as mayor from 1979 to 1997.

2. Gov. Ritter has ordered U.S. and Colorado flags lowered to half-staff on state buildings across Colorado on Saturday, May 10, in observance of the Colorado Fallen Firefighters Foundation annual memorial service and fire apparatus procession. Four names are being added to the memorial:

1. Capt. Shane Stewart, Ault-Pierce Fire Protection District, who died Feb. 23, 2008, while responding to a medical emergency call.
2. Chief Terry DeVore, Olney Springs Volunteer Fire Department, who died April 15, 2008, while responding to a brush fire.
3. Firefighter John Schwartz Jr., Olney Springs Volunteer Fire Department, who died April 15, 2008, while responding to a brush fire.
4. Pilot Gert Marais, Aero Applicators of Sterling, who died April 15, 2008, when his single-engine air tanker crashed while fighting a wild land fire.

3. Gov. Ritter has ordered U.S. and Colorado flags lowered to half-staff on state and federal buildings across Colorado, pursuant to H.R. 692, on Monday, May 12, 2008, in observance of a memorial service for Army Specialist Ronald J. Tucker, 21, of Fountain. Specialist Tucker died in Iraq on April 30 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

4. Gov. Ritter has ordered U.S. and Colorado flags lowered to half-staff on state and federal buildings across Colorado, pursuant to H.R. 692, on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in observance of a memorial service for Marine Sgt. Glen Martinez, 31, of Monte Vista. Sgt. Martinez died Friday, May 2, during his second tour of duty in Iraq.
