Vermont Governor Proclaims Vermont Earth Week
Kicks off week with awards for environmental excellence and pollution prevention
April 21, 2008 -- MONTPELIER, Vt. – With Earth Day events planned around the globe on April 22, Vermont Governor Jim Douglas has proclaimed this week to be Vermont Earth Week, with a call to Vermonters to celebrate and honor our environment’s role in our livelihood.

“While Vermont is the greenest state in the nation, it is important to contemplate how we can most effectively address environmental challenges and create more green jobs,” Douglas said. “Vermonters have always rallied to protect what is most near and dear to our way of life. We can do more – we are doing more – but Vermont Earth Week is also a time to celebrate our rich and deep tradition of a working landscape and the relationship between a healthy environment and a growing economy.”
On Monday, April 21, the Governor will announce his awards for environmental excellence and pollution prevention. The event will be held in the House chamber, from 3 to 4 p.m.
“Beyond the obvious efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, we must also continue to promote green entrepreneurial activities that take us along the path of a growing, sustainable and more innovative economy,” Governor Douglas said. “We must have both a strong economy and a healthy environment, or will we have neither.”
The 15th annual Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence and Pollution Prevention honor businesses, organizations and Vermonters for their environmental stewardship and conservation.
Winners are singled out for the benefit they have to the environment, use of innovative approaches, techniques and technologies, level of commitment and leadership in waste reduction and pollution prevention, the ability of their program or activity to serve as a model for others and the economic efficiency of their efforts.
