Equal Pay Day Recognized In Iowa
In U.S. women, on average, earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men
April 21, 2008 -- Des Moines – Rachel Scott, division administrator of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, and Elisabeth Buck, director of Iowa Workforce Development, will recognize Equal Pay Day at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 in the Kennedy Conference Room of the Iowa State Capitol with a Governor’s Proclamation and press conference.
Scott and Buck will discuss the results of the recently released Gender Wage Equity Study and how businesses and policymakers can use that data to work to close the pay gap. New data is available that looks at women’s earnings within specific industries. A brief statement will also be read from the American Association of University Women, a longtime sponsor of Equal Pay Day.
Pat Corbett, Director of Business Relationship Management, at ING in Des Moines , will also speak. ING was recently awarded one of only two national Catalyst Awards, recognition for initiatives that advance women in the workplace.
Tuesday, April 22 is Equal Pay Day. Tuesday symbolizes the day when women’s wages catch up to men’s wages from the previous week. In other words, because women earn less, on average, they must work nearly seven days to earn what the average man would earn in five.
Across the nation, women, on average, earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. Women of color fare even worse. According to the Iowa study, when looking at employment within specific industries, women in Iowa earn an average of 62% of what men earn monthly.
