Alabama Governor Riley Applauds House Committee for Moving Transportation Bill Forward
April 09, 2008 -- MONTGOMERY - Alabama Governor Bob Riley today thanked members of the House Government Appropriations Committee for giving a favorable report to HB 697, sponsored by Representative Mac Gipson, which would grant exemptions from federal motor carrier safety regulations for the operation of vehicles under 26,001 pounds which operate in solely intrastate commerce.

Without passage of this bill, the state stands to lose $3.4 million dollars in federal funds. These funds are critical to the Alabama Department of Public Safety program responsible for inspecting all commercial trucks traveling through the state and enforcing safety standards.
“I would like to thank the members of the committee for giving this bill a favorable report,” said Governor Riley. “In addition to providing meaningful exemptions requested by Alabama’s farmers, passage of the bill will ensure the safety of all traveling on Alabama’s highways.”
“I would also like to commend Colonel Chris Murphy and his staff for his efforts to secure federal approval of these exemptions.”
The bill now goes to the full House for a vote.
