April 8, 2008 -- David North is to depart his post as Managing Director of Pan Macmillan after eight years with the company.

David leaves Pan Macmillan in a particularly strong position after a year which saw 13% growth, numerous awards and prizes for its authors, a number of key signings and the ambitious expansion of Macmillan Children's Books through the acquisition of Kingfisher.

David North said, "It has been a great privilege to lead Pan Macmillan, working with wonderful authors and hugely talented colleagues. I'd like to thank them all for making the past eight years so enjoyable and stimulating. I leave the company in great strength coming off the back of a record sales year and a strong first quarter performance. Pan Macmillan is set for an exciting future and I wish them every success."

Annette Thomas, Chief Executive of Macmillan Publishers Ltd, paid tribute to David.

She said, "David and I joined the Macmillan Executive Board at about the same time and I have always admired his energy, his enthusiasm, his passion for publishing and the loyalty and support he has shown his team. David took on the reins at Pan Macmillan following a prolonged period of reorganisation, and the stability now enjoyed by the company is in great part down to him. David brought a holistic and inclusive approach to the company, breaking down barriers between the divisions and focusing on creating a media-driven organisation in an increasingly competitive and tough market. He has built one of the best teams in the business. I know I speak on behalf of everyone at Macmillan when I say how much he will be missed."

A transition plan is being developed with a view to David leaving on Friday 11th April.
