April 2, 2008 -- JEFFERSON CITY -- Missouri Governor Matt Blunt tonight urged Missourians who were impacted by flooding last week to be prepared as more flooding is expected.

“The National Weather Service indicates several more inches of rain will fall across the state impacting areas impacted by the recent flooding,” Gov. Blunt said.

“During the floods, many swift water rescues were conducted, roads were closed and driving was dangerous as thousands of Missourians were evacuated from their flooded homes. I urge Missourians to watch for and heed flash flood warnings and if necessary seek shelter with friends or relatives outside of the areas vulnerable to flooding.”

The Corps of Engineers is working with several major dams on controlled water releases into local rivers. Yesterday Blunt activated SEMA to ensure state agencies could respond to local needs as the storms continue to develop around the state.

“With the uncertainty about the amount of rain from expected future severe weather, communities down stream from dams also need to monitor the media concerning rises in river levels,” said Mark James director of the Department of Public Safety.

Missourians who need resource referrals or non-emergency help are urged to call 211 from their landline telephones. The 211 Service is now available for most areas of Missouri and helps citizens with disaster information and referrals. In areas where 211 is not operational or when using a cell phone, citizens may call 800-427-4626.
