Colorado Rockies Announce Transactions
Transactions for March 29
DENVER, 03/29/2008 -- The Colorado Rockies announced the following roster moves after the game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Friday: right-handed pitchers Jose Capellan and Josh Towers cleared outright waivers, and their contracts have been outrighted to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Additionally, catcher Edwin Bellorin, outfielder Cory Sullivan and right-handed pitcher Ryan Speier have been optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Capellan, 27, is 5-7 with a 4.90 ERA (121 1/3 innings pitched, 66 earned runs) in 98 career games with Atlanta (2004), Milwaukee (2005-07) and Detroit (2007). He was acquired by the Rockies from Detroit in exchange for right-handed pitcher Denny Bautista on Dec. 4, 2007. After being sidelined early in camp with an injury (right ankle sprain), Capellan made his Cactus League debut with the Rockies on March 24 vs. Milwaukee at Maryvale.
Towers, 31, has made 112 starts in (137 games) in seven major league seasons since 2001. The right-hander was signed by Colorado as a free agent on Jan. 7, 2008. He spent the previous five seasons with Toronto, where he was 37-42 with a 4.96 ERA (558 1/3 inning pitched, 306 earned runs). He posted a career-best 13 wins for the 2005 Blue Jays.
Bellorin, 26, spent the majority of last season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, hitting .326 (72-for-221) with nine home runs and 45 RBIs. He made his Major League debut with the Rockies last season. The Bolivar, Venezuela native was once rated the best defensive catcher in the Dodgers' Minor League system by Baseball America. Cory Sullivan, 28, is in his eighth professional season with the Rockies organization. Last year, he hit .286 (40-for-140) while playing all three outfield positions. Sullivan appeared in six postseason games for the Rockies in 2007, going 2-for-6 (.333) with two singles.
The 27-year-old Speier is 5-2 with a 3.80 ERA (42 2/3 innings pitched, 18 earned runs) in 42 career games, all with the Rockies. Last season, the right-hander earned all three of his wins during the Rockies' streak of 14 wins in the final 15 games to close out the regular season. His three victories during that stretch led the club.
The Colorado Rockies now have 26 players are on their Major League Spring Training roster, including two non-roster players.
