Houston Astros Outright Reggie Abercrombie, Chad Paronto to Round Rock
- Houston Astros active Spring roster now stands at 28 players
- Right-hander has 72 hours to accept assignment or elect free agency
HOUSTON, 03/28/2008 -- The Houston Astros announced today that outfielder Reggie Abercrombie cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Round Rock. The club also outrighted right-handed pitcher Chad Paronto to Round Rock, and he has 72 hours to accept the assignment or elect free agency. The announcements were made by General Manager Ed Wade.
Reggie Abercrombie, 26, hit .217 (10x46) with five RBI and nine stolen bases in 26 games for the Astros this Spring. He has played in 146 career Major League games during two seasons with Florida (2006-07) and has hit .208 (69x331) with seven home runs and 29 RBI.
Chad Paronto, 32, was 0-3 with a 12.38 ERA (11ER/8IP) in eight Spring appearances for Houston. A veteran of five Major League seasons with Baltimore (2001), Cleveland (2002-03), and Atlanta (2006-07), he is 6-11 with a 4.06 ERA (74ER/166.1IP) and one save in 165 career big league appearances.
Any player with a prior outright or three or more years of Major League service time has the option to elect free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment. Paronto qualifies under both criteria, and he has 72 hours to make his decision.
The Astros Spring roster of active players now stands at 28 players. Houston hosts the Detroit Tigers at Minute Maid Park in a pair of exhibition games this weekend, including a 7:05 p.m. start tonight (Friday, March 28) and a 1:05 p.m. start tomorrow (Saturday, March 29).
