Tampa Bay Rays Claim Outfielder Nathan Haynes from Los Angeles Angels
03/28/2008, ST. PETERSBURG -- The Tampa Bay Rays claimed left-handed hitting outfielder Nathan Haynes off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. To clear room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Rocco Baldelli was placed on the 60- day disabled list (Mitochondrial disorder). Haynes will join the Rays for Monday's season opener in Baltimore.
Nathan Haynes, 28, made his Major League debut in 2007 with the Angels, batting .267 in 40 games. His contract was purchased May 28 from Salt Lake (AAA) and he remained in the Majors the rest of the season. He played all three outfield positions for the Angels. Haynes was named the Angels' organizational player of the month last April. At the time of his recall, he was hitting .386 (66-for-171) with four home runs and 14 stolen bases for Salt Lake and was leading the Pacific Coast League in average, hits, triples (six) and on-base percentage (.466).
This spring, Nathan Haynes hit .265 (9-for-34) with four stolen bases in 19 Cactus League games for the Angels.
Haynes is a career .281 hitter with 254 stolen bases over parts of 11 Minor League seasons with the Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and Angels organizations. He was the 32nd overall player selected in the 1997 June Draft by the Athletics.
