MONTGOMERY - New and expanding industry announcements in 2007 resulted in a record-breaking year in Alabama, said Governor Bob Riley.

The more than $6.8 billion in capital investments from industrial projects is the highest recorded in the state’s annual records, which date back to 1947.

Those industries also resulted in 24,244 announced new jobs during 2007.

“These investments and the jobs they bring are making Alabama’s future brighter for all our citizens,” said Governor Riley. “Our strategy to assist existing industries and recruit new companies is working, and we will continue to aggressively pursue new jobs and more investment for the people of Alabama.”

The report on the state’s economic development activity in 2007 was released Thursday by the Alabama Development Office. The report shows that 94 new companies began calling Alabama home last year and 379 existing industries in the state saw expansions.

The new industries resulted in 10,172 announced new jobs; the existing industry expansions resulted in 14,072 announced new jobs.

“Governor Riley has led a vigorous and energetic effort to diversify our economy and expand growth throughout the state. That’s been the plan since the Governor came into office and it continues to work well and get results,” said ADO Director Neal Wade.

Some highlights of the 2007 annual economic development report:

· Alabama won what is believed to be the single largest industrial project in America in terms of jobs and investment last year, the ThyssenKrupp steel and stainless steel processing facility plant locating in north Mobile County.

· Cullman County recorded the highest number of new and existing industry expansions - 58.

· Madison County saw the most announced new jobs in the state - 4,181.
