Recent Colorado Rockies Transactions
03/27/2008, TUCSON -- The Colorado Rockies announced the following roster moves this afternoon: outfielder Seth Smith and infielders Omar Quintanilla and Ian Stewart were optioned to Minor League Spring Training camp. Catcher Humber Cota was re-assigned to Minor League camp. Additionally, non-roster invitee Marcus Giles was granted his unconditional release.
Cota, 29, agreed to terms on a Minor League contract with the Colorado Rockies last Saturday, March 22. He caught 3.0 innings and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in his Rockies debut that day. He has played in parts of seven big league seasons with the Pirates since 2001.
Smith, 25, played in 20 games and hit .303 (10-for-33) with four doubles, a home run and 11 RBI. He spent time at both corner outfield positions.
Quintanilla, 26, batted .367 (11-for-30) with two doubles, two triples and four RBI in 18 Cactus League games. He played every infield position except first base, spending the majority of his time at shortstop.
Stewart, 22, hit .265 (13-for-49) with four home runs and 11 RBI. He hit a walk-off, two-run home run last Monday, St. Patrick's Day, against the Giants at Hi Corbett Field. He currently ranks second on the club with four Cactus League homers.
The 29-year-old Giles hit .321 (9-for-28) with five extra-base hits, including four doubles and a triple. He signed with Colorado as a Minor League free agent on Jan. 8, 2008. The 2003 All-Star second baseman owns a career .277 average (813-for-2934) with 76 home runs and 333 RBI in seven Major League seasons with Atlanta (2001-06) and San Diego (2007).
The Colorado Rockies now have 31 players are on their Major League Spring Training roster, including two non-roster players.
