Tennessee Disaster Aid Adds Up To $6.7 Million

March 10, 2008, NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Nearly five weeks after Tennessee's severe storms and tornadoes, $6.7 million has been approved in disaster assistance grants and loans for homeowners, renters and business owners by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Following are highlights of assistance as of Monday, March 10:

* $2,599,724 has been approved through FEMA's Individuals and Households Program for housing assistance, including rental assistance and repairs to homes for eligible applicants. Of that, $1,882,196 is for housing assistance and $717,528 is to help applicants cover other essential disaster-related needs.
* $4,117,700 in loans to homeowners, renters and business owners has been approved by SBA.
* 4,136 applicants have registered with FEMA for some form of disaster assistance.
* 2,734 residents have visited Disaster Recovery Centers operated jointly by FEMA and the state of Tennessee.
* 2,109 home inspections have been completed.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
