Philadelphia Phillies Davey Lopes Faces Surgery, Jerry Martin to Fill In
03/03/2008 -- First base coach Davey Lopes will undergo prostate cancer surgery later this month, the Philadelphia Phillies announced today. A full recovery is expected.
Following surgery, Lopes will be sidelined for approximately six weeks. Dr. Scott Klavans will perform the surgery at Morton Plant Hospital.
Until Davey can return to uniform, Jerry Martin will coach first base. Martin, who played in the majors from 1979-84, is the outfield coordinator for the Phillies player development staff. Prior to this season, he was also the base running coordinator, a position he held since 2004.
