McCain Myth Buster: John McCain and The Kentucky Ballot

Energy   Environment   Labor   Obama   Education   ARRA   By state   more...

February 28, 2008 -- After casting himself as a "Maverick" in 2000, the new John McCain is walking in lockstep with President Bush, pandering to the right wing of the Republican Party, and embracing the ideology he once denounced. On the campaign trail McCain has callously abandoned many of his previously held positions, even contradicted himself, in a blatant attempt to remake himself into a candidate Republicans can accept in 2008. So just who is the real John McCain? The Democratic National Committee will present a daily fact aimed at exposing the man behind the myth.

Today's McCain Myth: John McCain's campaign has been truthful when talking about his withdrawal from the matching funds program.

Though he has cast himself as a straight-talker who always tells the truth even when it hurts him politically, the McCain campaign's arguments surrounding his withdrawal from the public financing system have been anything but straight talk.

On a conference call with reporters, the McCain campaign claimed that it had collected signatures to get on the ballot for the Kentucky primary. The fact is, as the DNC revealed yesterday, McCain did not qualify for the ballot by collecting signatures, but by demonstrating that he had qualified for the ballot in at least 20 other states. One of those states was Delaware, where McCain got on the ballot by citing the FEC's approval of his application for matching funds.

Time and time again, McCain's campaign has been more than willing to twist the facts to cover up for the candidate who will do anything to win.
