HBO Documentary Films Presentations' "Taxi to the Dark Side" and "Freeheld" Receive Academy Awards
February 25, 2008 -- The HBO Documentary Films presentation Taxi to the Dark Side received an Academy Award® in the category of Documentary Feature and the HBO Documentary Films presentation Freeheld received an Academy Award® in the category of Documentary Short when the 80th annual Academy Awards® were presented at the 2008 ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Feb. 24.
A gripping investigation into the reckless abuse of power, Taxi to the Dark Side probes the homicide of an innocent taxi driver at the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan while exposing America's policy of detention and interrogation that condones torture. This disturbing and often brutal film is an incisive examination of the current administration's prosecution of the "war on terror."
Currently entering national theatrical release through THINKFilm, Taxi to the Dark Side was written, directed and narrated by Alex Gibney; producers, Alex Gibney, Eva Orner, Susannah Shipman; executive producers, Don Glascoff, Robert Johnson, Sidney Blumenthal, Jedd Wider, Todd Wider. Taxi to the Dark Side will debut on HBO this September.
Freeheld follows the landmark legal battle of Lieutenant Laurel Hester, a dying lesbian New Jersey police officer who fights to transfer her pension to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree. As her elected officials, The Freeholders, stand firmly against her, and as the town explodes around her, Laurel races against time to provide for the love of her life - before it is too late.
