Senator John McCain Welcomes Kosovo's Independence
February 18, 2008, Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement regarding Kosovo's declaration of independence:
"With its declaration of independence, Kosovo and the Balkans with it has taken a major step out of the 1990s and into the 21st century. Eleven years ago, that region was in flames, characterized by ethnic cleansing and widespread violence. Today, for the first time, the region is poised to move forward. The people of Kosovo should be commended for the great strides they have made and the bright future that lies ahead.
"The United States and the rest of the international community can help solidify these gains by quickly recognizing Kosovo's independence. With independence, however, comes domestic and international responsibilities and the government in Pristina will be expected to protect the Serb minority, conduct a responsible foreign policy, and follow the rule of law. When I met with Kosovo's leadership in Pristina last year, their commitment to these principles was clear. That commitment will be vital in the coming days and months in order to ensure that all parties act with prudence and restraint.
"During my visit a year ago, I saw once again the dynamism of the region's people. Today the sense is palpable that the Balkans is on the brink of a new era, and this new era should include Serbia. Serbia, which in its most recent election turned aside the temptations of ultranationalism, must now avoid overreacting to Kosovo's declaration. Should it do so, Serbia will move down a path of greater European integration and look toward the future as a modern and prosperous nation. That vision of security and prosperity for all of the region's nations represents the future of the Balkans.
"By recognizing Kosovo's independence and by transitioning continuing responsibilities there to increasing European hands, we can at long last close the door on the region's
