San Diego Padres Agree to Terms with Khalil Greene on Two-Year Contract

02/12/2008, SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that they have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with infielder Khalil Greene through the 2009 season. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

The 28-year-old shortstop was named the Padres 2007 MVP after a year in which he set career highs in games played (153), runs scored (89), hits (155), doubles (44), home runs (27) and RBI (97). Khalil Greene ranked among the top National League shortstops in RBI (2nd), doubles (2nd), home runs (3rd) and slugging percentage (6th, .468), setting Padres single-season records for a shortstop in doubles, home runs, RBI and runs scored.

His 44 doubles in 2007 rank fifth on the Padres all-time single-season list while his 29 road doubles placed second in the Majors behind teammate Adrian Gonzalez. Greene's career-high 74 extra-base hits also rank fifth on the Padres all-time single-season list.

In his 153 games at shortstop last season, Khalil Greene set career marks in total chances (690), putouts (218), assists (461) and double plays (98). With just 11 errors, his .984 fielding percentage set a franchise, single-season record for a shortstop.

Originally selected by the Padres in the first round (13th overall) of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, Greene has hit .254 (511-for-2008) with 135 doubles, 12 triples, 74 home runs, 293 RBI and 271 runs scored over parts of five Major League seasons (2003-07) with San Diego.
