February 12, 2008, Silver Spring, MD -- Discovery Channel and Science Channel announced today that Randy Rieland has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Interactive Media and that Iain Langridge has joined Discovery Channel as Vice President of Interactive Media reporting to Rieland. Rieland reports directly to John Ford, President and General Manager of Discovery Channel and is a key member of the Digital Media leadership team under Josh Freeman, the company’s Executive Vice President of Digital Media.

Most recently, Rieland served as Vice President of New Media for Discovery Channel. Under his purview, Discovery.com has achieved tremendous growth and earned several industry awards. Discovery.com was selected as a 2007 Top 10 Website by Adweek and Mediaweek and the website for Discovery’s EVEREST program won an Online Journalism Award in the "Outstanding Use of Digital Media" category, among other accolades.

"Randy has done an incredible job of building a robust offering that extends the Discovery Channel's brand and programming online," said John Ford. "I look forward to working with him and his team to further deepen the level of consumer engagement and viewer loyalty to the brand across all media platforms."

In his new role, Rieland will work with key constituents to develop the web strategy and content vision to extend the #1 non-fiction media brand online, through Discovery.com and ScienceChannel.com, as well as across other digital media platforms including video on demand, mobile, and broadband. In addition, he will have oversight of short-form content for applications across all platforms including eCommerce to ensure monetization and revenue growth consistent with the company’s digital media growth plans.

Newly appointed Langridge will start by working with Rieland on a number of key initiatives, including the integration of Discovery's interactive content with the deep, archival material on the How Stuff Works website. Also, he will work closely with Discovery's interactive executive producers and its Digital Media Ad Sales team to develop innovative opportunities for digital content-driven monetization, and work to develop use of Discovery’s domestic interactive content internationally.

"I'm very happy to have someone of Iain's talent and broad experience joining our team," said Rieland. "He's just the kind of person who can help us sustain our momentum and move us up to the next level of producing content that extends Discovery's brand on to digital platforms in more innovative ways that will also strike a chord with forward-thinking advertisers."

Rieland joined Discovery in 1995 and has held various positions in the interactive department serving most recently as Vice President of New Media for Discovery Channel. Prior to joining Discovery, Randy served in numerous editorials roles at magazines and newspapers on the East Coast with his most recent stint as Senior Editor at Washingtonian magazine. Rieland authored The New Professionals, a book about major league baseball in the 1970s. He holds a Bachelor of Science with honors from Ohio University, Athens, OH.

Langridge joins Discovery from AOL, LLC where he most recently served as Vice President of International Product Management. While at AOL, working with partners across the business, his teams deployed a portfolio of the company’s products internationally, launched AOL branded portals and products in Italy and Spain and oversaw the company’s low-cost ISP operations. Previously, Langridge ran a strategic marketing consultancy working with media and advertising companies in the UK and USA. Langridge earned his MBA with distinction, from London Business School and a Bachelor of Science with honors from the University of Durham, in the UK.

Both Rieland and Langridge will be based at Discovery’s global headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.
