Sierra Club is asking "Where was Senator McCain on Clean Energy?
February 7, 2008 -- Washington, DC: Last night one vote prevented the Senate from advancing an economic stimulus package that included important clean energy incentives--a key addition to the package passed by the House last week. Despite being in Washington, John McCain was the only Senator who missed the vote, thus insuring its defeat. This latest move against more clean energy comes at a time when McCain's speeches are full of pledges to increase America's use of clean energy to fight global warming.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, January 14, 2008, McCain said, "Of course we want renewable energy. Of course we want better standards. I want to do everything I can to see that wind, solar, hydrogen, ethanol ... and all of these, including nuclear power, [are put to better use]."
"Despite what he says as he travels around the country, Senator McCain missed this important vote on clean energy," said Carl Pope, Executive Director of Sierra Club. "If Senator McCain had voted yes yesterday, he could have helped America have an economic stimulus package that saved jobs and our environment at the same time."
Sierra Club is launching a grassroots campaign today to urge citizens to call Senator McCain and tell him to be sure to show up and vote yes next time.
"We're urging the public to contact Senator McCain and ask him why he failed to show up for a vote which could determine the future of green energy in America," added Pope. "What is more important than helping us reduce our reliance on dirty power that kept him from showing up to vote? Where is John McCain on Clean Energy?"
When 99 other Senators showed up to vote and clean energy lost by a single vote, where was John McCain?
