Pittsburgh Pirates, Freddy Sanchez Agree to Terms on a Two-Year Plus Club Option Contract
02/05/2008 -- The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have agreed to terms with two-time All-Star infielder Freddy Sanchez on a two-year contract, with a club option for the 2010 season. The announcement was made by Neal Huntington, the Pirates Senior Vice President and General Manager.
Sanchez established career highs in at bats (602), home runs (11) and walks (32) while batting .304 with 42 doubles and 81 RBI for Pittsburgh last season. He was also named to the National League All-Star team for the second straight year and made 146 starts at second base, the third-highest total in the league. In addition, the local chapter of the BBWAA voted Sanchez as the team's Most Valuable Player for the second straight year.
In 2006, Sanchez captured the National League batting championship after hitting .344 in 157 games for the Pirates. He also led the league with 53 doubles and established a club record for most doubles in a season by a right-handed batter.
"Freddy is an important part of this organization and we are excited to have him under contact for his last two arbitration years and his first year of free agency," said Huntington. "This contract is an illustration of our willingness to commit to our quality young players who are positive representatives of the Pirates both on and off the field."
The 30-year-old infielder was acquired by the Pirates from the Boston Red Sox, along with pitcher Mike Gonzalez, in a deal for pitchers Jeff Suppan, Brandon Lyon and Anastacio Martinez on July 31, 2003. Freddy enters the 2008 campaign with a .310 career batting average, 123 doubles, 22 homers and 207 RBI in 477 games.
Sanchez has generously agreed to make a sizable annual donation to Pirates Charities as part of his agreement with the ballclub. Established as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2006, Pirates Charities is the club's official philanthropic arm and is committed to strengthening the community through its concentration on the core areas of youth health, fitness and education.
