02/05/2008, ARLINGTON -- The Texas Rangers announced today that they have acquired outfielder Michael Hernandez from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Armando Galarraga. Galarraga was originally designated for assignment on January 25 in order to make room on the 40-man roster for right-handed pitcher Jason Jennings.

Michael Hernandez, 24, split the 2007 season between Single-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie. He combined to hit .259 (127-491) with 27 doubles, four triples, 24 home runs and 106 RBI in 134 games. He appeared in 88 games as an outfielder, collecting eight assists. The Oklahoma State product was originally signed by Detroit as a non-drafted free agent on March 17, 2006 and spent the rest of the season at Single-A West Michigan. Hernandez played parts of two seasons under new Rangers third base coach Matt Walbeck during Walbeck's managerial tenure at Erie (2007) and West Michigan (2004-06).

Armando Galarraga, 26, spent most of last season with Double-A Frisco, going 9-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 23 games/22 starts. He also made 4 starts at Oklahoma (AAA) and made his Major League debut with Texas, posting no record with a 6.23 ERA (6 ER/8.2 IP) in 3 games/1 start. He was acquired by Texas in a four-player trade with Washington on Dec. 12, 2005.
