Bill Sets Aggressive Energy Efficiency Standards for Utilities

February 1, 2008 -- SANTA FE – Today the House of Representatives passed House Bill 305, Amendments to the Efficient Use of Energy Act, sponsored by Speaker Ben Lujan. The bill passed with a unanimous 63-0 vote. The bill now moves on to the New Mexico Senate.

“I called for electric utilities to invest in energy efficiency programs in my State of the State,” said New Mexico Governor Richardson. “Conservation is cheaper and cleaner than new power plants. I’m pleased that the House of Representatives is joining me to achieve new energy efficiency savings, reducing costs for consumers and overall energy usage."

“This bill will help all consumers, and particularly New Mexico’s low-income families, from experiencing financial hardships as energy costs continue to rise,” said Speaker Lujan. “Energy efficiency has been proven to help meet electricity needs at less than half the cost to consumers of developing new electric power plants."

The bill is supported by low income and senior advocates, utilities, conservationists, industrial users and groups such as the Coalition for Clean Affordable Energy, Community Action New Mexico, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club and Environment New Mexico.
