Senator Clinton Welcomes Nearly $8 Million in FEMA Funding for Long Island
Senator Clinton Requested FEMA Assistance Following Storms Last Year
February 1, 2008 -- Washington, DC — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton today welcomed the announcement of four grants totaling $7,972,123.50 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help repair damage to Long Island’s dunes and beaches caused by the April 2007 storm. Senator Clinton requested federal assistance when she visited storm ravaged parts of New York last April.
“I’m pleased that FEMA is releasing these grants to assist with the repair efforts on Long Island. Restoring New York’s beaches is a priority for our environment and our economy, and this help is long overdue to the New Yorkers who lost so much last year,” said Senator Clinton. “When I toured damaged areas of New York last spring, I called on the Administration to act quickly so that these communities would have the resources needed to rebuild. For areas that continue to feel the effects of last year’s Nor’easter, this funding will provide a measure of relief.”
Senator Clinton visited storm damaged parts of New York last April. At that time, she urged the President to issue a Federal Disaster Declaration and to expedite FEMA’s assessment of damage to the twelve New York counties affected by the storm. She also called on the IRS to extend the 2007 tax deadline for affected residents.
Details of the four FEMA grants are below:
* Town of Brookhaven - $1,703,775 – Replace sand and sand fence to repair the eroded beach and dunes at Fire Island Pines.
* Suffolk County - $1,774,018.50 – Replace sand for eroded beaches and replace dune vegetation at Smith Point County Park.
* New York State Parks and Recreation - $1,741,021.50 – Replace sand for eroded beaches and replace dune vegetation at Robert Moses State Park.
* Suffolk County - $2,753,308.50 - Replace sand for eroded beaches and conduct post-construction monitoring for one year.
