Two players invited to Major League Spring Training

01/29/2008, HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Brian Moehler and infielder/outfielder David Newhan to minor league contracts with invitations to Major League Spring Training. The announcements were made by General Manager Ed Wade.

Brian Moehler, 36, went 1-4 with his first career save and a 4.07 ERA (27ER/59.2IP) in a career-high 42 games for the Astros in 2007. During 10 seasons in the Majors from 1996-2003 and 2005-07, Moehler is 64-83 with a 4.75 ERA (636ER/1206IP) in 252 games (189 starts). He was also a non-roster invitee to the Astros Major League Spring Training in 2007 and spent the entire regular season last year with the Major League club.

David Newhan, 34, hit .203 (15-for-74) with one home run, six RBI and two stolen bases in 56 games for the New York Mets in 2007. He also played 44 games for Triple A New Orleans last season, hitting .347 (60-for-173) with 12 doubles, seven home runs, 30 RBI and seven stolen bases.

A veteran of seven Major League seasons with San Diego (1999-2000), Philadelphia (2000-01), Baltimore (2004-06) and the New York Mets (2007), Newhan has hit .252 (222-for-882) with 21 home runs, 108 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 349 career big league games.
