St. Louis Cardinals Sign Pitcher Todd Wellemeyer
St. Louis Cardinals settle all salary arbitration cases with signing
01/28/2008, ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals today announced the signing of pitcher Todd Wellemeyer to a one-year deal. With today's signing, the Cardinals have settled each of their three potential salary arbitration cases. Rick Ankiel and Yadier Molina both agreed to terms earlier this month.
Todd Wellemeyer was claimed off waivers from Kansas City last May 15, and started 11 times for the club with nine bullpen appearances the remainder of the year. Was 3-1 with a 3.65 ERA in his 11 starts (20 ER/ 49.1 IP) with a club win-loss mark of 9-2 in those starts. He had just a 1.26 ERA in his 14.1 IP of relief while with the Redbirds. Todd missed 39 games during the season's second-half while disabled with a sprained right elbow.
The 29-year-old has a career 9-10 record in his four-plus years in the majors with a 4.98 ERA. Last season with St. Louis was the first time he had been used as a starter during his Major League career. Todd is one of three current Cardinals (Joel Pineiro and Brad Thompson) who split time last season pitching as both a starter and a reliever.
