Chicago White Sox Acquire Willy Mota and Miguel Socolovich from Boston Red Sox for David Aardsma
01/28/2008, CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitchers Willy Mota and Miguel Socolovich from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-hander David Aardsma.
Willy Mota, 22, went 5-3 with a 2.60 ERA (8 ER/27.2 IP) and 22 strikeouts in 17 relief appearances with Advanced Rookie Lowell in 2007, his first season as a pitcher. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic limited opponents to a .225 (23-102) average and averaged 7.2 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.
A converted outfielder, Mota was rated by Baseball America in 2005 as having the Best Outfield Arm in the Red Sox organization. He batted .234 (122-521) with six home runs and 56 RBI from 2003-06.
Miguel Socolovich, 21, split the 2007 season between Class A Greenville in the South Atlantic League and Lowell in the New York-Penn League. The native of Caracas, Venezuela was 2-2 with a 6.65 ERA (16 ER/21.2 IP) in 11 relief appearances with Greenville and 5-4 with a 3.56 ERA (27 ER/68.1 IP) in 14 games (13 starts) with Lowell.
Socolovich, 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, owns a career record of 12-9 with a 3.76 ERA (67 ER/160.1 IP) and 115 strikeouts in 56 games (19 starts) over three minor-league seasons. He has held opposing batters to a .239 (143-598) average.
David Aardsma, 26, was designated for assignment by the White Sox on January 22. He split the 2007 season between the White Sox and Class AAA Charlotte, going 2-1 with a 6.40 ERA (23 ER/32.1 IP) and 36 strikeouts in 25 relief appearances with the Sox.
