January 29th, 2008 -- SANTA FE - New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson today applauded Senate passage of the Biomedical Research Act by a vote of (20-18). Senate Bill 23 sponsored by Senator John Ryan, will allow research universities such as UNM to conduct embryonic stem cell research.

“By passing this bill the Senate recognized that our clinical research laws are out of date, and we should move forward to conduct potentially life-saving research under careful conditions and important restrictions,” said Governor Richardson. “Today the Senate placed a priority on finding cures for the millions who suffer from diabetes, spinal cord injuries and diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s."

The Biomedical Research Act creates guidelines and allows researchers to utilize embryonic stem cells in research at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. An estimated 128 million Americans suffer from crippling physical and psychological burdens of chronic, degenerative and acute diseases. This legislation would allow for further human embryonic stem cell research and other biomedical research
