Colorado Gov. Ritter Names Attorney General Suthers Special Prosecutor In 1987 Hettrick Murder Case
Jan. 29, 2008 -- Colorado Governor Bill Ritter today appointed Attorney General John W. Suthers as the special prosecutor in the 1987 murder case of Peggy Hettrick, granting a request by the Larimer County District Attorney's Office.
"Following the events of the past few weeks, Peggy Hettrick's murder remains unsolved," Gov. Ritter said. "Several local prosecutors' offices are currently or have been involved in this case over the past two decades, creating a potential conflict of interest for any of them to pursue a new investigation. The Colorado Attorney General's Office offers the most effective option for an independent investigation.
"The state of Colorado has an obligation to Ms. Hettrick, her family and the people of Colorado to fully investigate her killing," Gov. Ritter added. "This must be accomplished in a manner that not only serves the interests of justice in this case but also strengthens the public's confidence in the criminal justice system.
"In the interest of justice and at the request of Eighth Judicial District Attorney Larry Abrahamson, I am designating Attorney General John W. Suthers to investigate the killing of Peggy Hettrick, and if appropriate, prosecute this case according to the law."
The appointment as special prosecutor shall expire upon completion of the investigation or possible prosecution.
