DoD Identifies Army Casualty: Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Ryan Kahler, 29, of Granite Falls, Minnesota
January 27, 2008 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Ryan Kahler, 29, of Granite Falls, Minnesota, died Jan. 26 in FOB Fenty, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from small arms fire in Waygul, Afghanistan.
Possible friendly fire.
Afghan guard (ally) possibly mistook the soldier as an enemy combatant and engaged with small arms fire. Incident is under investigation.
He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.
