January 24, 2008 -- JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri Governor Matt Blunt today asked President George W. Bush to approve a Disaster Declaration to help Missouri recover from a devastating storm that killed two and injured more than 30 people.

“After touring the affected areas and receiving reports from local assessment teams, I am requesting federal assistance to help Missourians recover from the latest winter storm.” Gov. Blunt said. “This assistance would support recovery efforts for Missourians in the affected counties and enhance the support we have been providing at the state and local level.”

Gov. Blunt is requesting a Disaster Declaration for Individual Assistance for the following 13 counties: Barry, Christian, Greene, Jasper, Laclede, Lawrence, Maries, McDonald, Phelps, Pulaski, Stone, Taney and Webster Counties.

The request for a Disaster Declaration for Individual Assistance is based on reports from preliminary damage assessments collected by joint federal, state and local teams. The teams identified 435 primary residences that were impacted by the disaster event. The Small Business Administration estimated that it will provide over $3 million in disaster home loans and another $1 million in disaster business loans. If the president approves Blunt’s request, Individual Assistance will provide disaster grants or low-interest loans to Missourians and businesses to help recover uninsured personal property and business losses.

Gov. Blunt is requesting a Disaster Declaration for Public Assistance for the following nine counties: Barry, Dallas, Laclede, Maries, McDonald, Newton, Phelps, Stone and Webster.

The request for a Disaster Declaration for Public Assistance is based on reports from preliminary damage assessments collected by joint federal, state and local teams. The teams identified over $8.2 million in damages to public infrastructure in nine counties. If the president approves Blunt’s request, Public Assistance will reimburse jurisdictions for their eligible emergency protective actions, repairs, or replacement of damaged infrastructure and debris clearance.
