Five players agree to terms on 2008 contracts

01/22/2008 -- The Baltimore Orioles today announced that they have signed RHP Lance Cormier to a Minor League contract with an invitation to their Major League spring training camp.

Lance Cormier, 27, began last season on the disabled list before splitting time between Atlanta and AAA Richmond. He went 2-6 with a 7.09 ERA in 10 games with the Braves and 4-2 with a 3.46 ERA in 10 starts for Richmond. He made 9 starts for Atlanta.

In 2006, pitching mostly in relief for the Braves, he went 4-5 with a 4.89 ERA after having been acquired from Arizona following the 2005 season. He made 67 relief appearances for Arizona in 2005, going 7-3 with a 5.11 ERA, and owns a 14-18 career mark with a 5.98 ERA in 123 games.

The Orioles now have 12 non-roster players invited to their spring major league camp.

The Orioles also announced that five players on the 40-man roster have agreed to terms on one-year contracts for the 2008 season: IF-OF Freddie Bynum, RHP Jim Johnson, RHP Bob McCrory, IF Scott Moore and RHP Dennis Sarfate.

Bynum hit .260 in 70 games last season, making starts at second base, shortstop, left field and center field in his first season with the Orioles. Johnson made one relief appearance for the Orioles in 2007 and went 6-12 with a 4.07 ERA for AAA Norfolk. McCrory combined to go 1-2 with 27 saves in 30 opportunities between Class A Frederick and AA Bowie.

Moore batted .255 with a home run and 11 RBI in 17 games after being acquired from the Cubs on August 31. Sarfate, acquired with four other players from Houston in exchange for SS Miguel Tejada on December 12, went 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA in 7 relief appearances for the Astros in September after being traded from Milwaukee. He was 2-7 with a 4.52 ERA in 45 games for AAA Nashville.
