SOUTH BEACH, Fla., Jan. 16, 2008 -- We all can ''clean up our acts'' a bit and Address the Mess, an environmental initiative from COMEDY CENTRAL, invites South Florida residents to ''Scrap Your Crap'' and save the planet by bringing their old, outdated consumer electronics, including computers, laptops, monitors, keyboards, printers, fax machines, televisions, VCRs, stereos, cell phones and home and office phones to the Address the Mess Electronics Recycling Event at the South Beach Comedy Festival on Saturday, January 19 for free drop-off and recycling in the front drive-way of The Fillmore at The Jackie Gleason Theatre from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Address the Mess Electronics Recycling Event is sponsored by Comcast, as well as Sony Electronics and Waste Management Recycle America, who recycle e-waste daily through the Sony Take Back Recycling Program.

Through this free electronics recycling event, COMEDY CENTRAL, along with sponsors Comcast, Sony Electronics and Waste Management Recycle America, hope to raise awareness on proper management and recycling of electronics and help make an impact on this critical issue.

How big a deal can this really be, one might ask? Very big. At least two million tons big, says the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, whose statistics claim that two million tons of tech trash ended up in landfills in 2005, while only about 380,000 tons were recycled. According to the National Resources Defense Council (www.nrdc.org), some of the materials found in personal electronics, such as lead, mercury and cadmium, are hazardous and can release dangerous toxins into our air and water if managed improperly. The NRDC also notes that by throwing away our cell phones and other electronics instead of recycling them, metal components, like copper, gold, silver and palladium, are wasted, leading to needless mining for new metals. How easy is it to make a difference? NRDC figures show that Americans threw away more than 100 million cell phones in 2006. Recycling these phones could have saved enough energy to power almost 200,000 U.S. households for one year.
