Oakland Athletics Agree to Terms with Huston Street on One-Year Contract

Oakland A's pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Feb. 13

01/17/2008, OAKLAND -- The Oakland Athletics announced today the club has agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Huston Street on a one-year contract for the 2008 season. Street was one of three remaining arbitration eligible players on the A's roster along with Joe Blanton and Chad Gaudin.

Huston Street, 24, posted a 5-2 record with 16 saves and a 2.88 ERA last season. He missed two months with a mid-season stint on the disabled list and was limited to just 48 appearances in 2007, his fewest in his three seasons in the Majors. Street was 2-1 with nine saves and a 2.50 ERA and a .148 opponent batting average over his first 18 appearances through May 12, but was placed on the 15 -day disabled list on May 15 with irritation of his right ulnar nerve. He was reinstated from the disabled list on July 23 and worked as the set-up man immediately following his return from the DL. He resumed his role as the A's closer on August 15 and went 3-0 with seven saves, three blown saves and a 2.95 ERA and a .198 opponent batting average over his final 19 appearances.

Street enters the 2008 season with 76 career saves, which ranks fourth in Oakland history and the fifth most in Major League history by the age of 24.

A's pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Wednesday, February 13 with the first workout scheduled for the next day. The remainder of the squad will report on Wednesday, February 20 with the first full squad workout set for February 21. The A's will open Cactus League play on Thursday, February 28 against the Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale.
