17 January 2008 -- Riot police in Kenya have clashed with opposition supporters Thursday in a second day of protests against the disputed re-election of President Mwai Kibaki.

Witnesses say police fired teargas and bullets at hundreds of supporters in Nairobi's Mathare slum and in the western city of Kisumu. Some injuries have been reported.

The opposition has called for demonstrations through Friday to protest what it says was the government's rigging of last month's presidential elections.

On Wednesday, the first day of the protests, police shot dead four demonstrators in Kisumu, where at least one thousand people were trying to gather.

Police also clashed with protesters in several other cities, injuring at least three others.

Last month, Kenya's electoral commission declared President Kibaki the winner of the presidential election, after a vote-counting process that international observers say was seriously flawed.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga insists he won the vote, and his Orange Democratic Movement has called on the president to resign or share power.

More than 600 people have been killed in the post-election violence.
