Arkansas Governor Beebe Declares Five Counties Disaster Areas Due To Tornado And Thunderstorm Damage

Jan 11, 2008 -- LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has declared Benton, Conway, Craighead, Poinsett and Pope Counties state disaster areas due to the damage caused by thunderstorms and tornadoes on Monday, January 7 and Tuesday, January 8.

A Disaster Recovery Center will be opened on Saturday, January 12 and Sunday, January 13 at the Appleton Community Center, located at 20189 State Route 124 in Appleton, to provide on-site assistance for tornado victims. Representatives from the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, Arkansas Department of Human Services, Arkansas Insurance Department and Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration will be on hand, as well as crisis counselors for any storm victims who would like counseling. The Center will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both days.

Governor Beebe's declaration releases $250,000 from the Governor’s Disaster Fund to be used by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management through the Individual Assistance Program. Affected residents in all five counties can apply for assistance by phone at 1-877-828-3362 or at their local Department of Human Services offices beginning Monday, January 14.
