In Iowa, Dodd Campaign Celebrates His Work Expanding Educational Opportunities For All

Des Moines, IA – On the fifth day of his 12 Days of Results Tour, Chris Dodd headed back to Washington to fight against a bill providing immunity for the telecom companies that participated with the Bush Administration in violating the civil liberties of millions of Americans. Back in Iowa, the Dodd Campaign celebrated the Senator’s work improving the quality of and access to educational opportunities for all children. A 26-year member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee and the current Chairman of the Subcommittee on Children and Families, Chris Dodd has been named the “Children’s Senator” by the National Head Start Association for his work to expand access to the Head Start program, to ensure that it is fully funded, and to constantly seek new and innovative strategies to improve the program, including facilitating collaboration between Head Start and other early childhood development programs.

Dodd has also spearheaded efforts to reform the “No Child Left Behind” Act, so that schools are held accountable for student academic improvements over time rather than by relying on one high-stakes test score. Dodd has also worked to increase funding for the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) by $1 billion and has worked with Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) on the “The IDEA Full Funding Act” – legislation to ensure that the federal government meets its promise to fund 40 percent of IDEA program costs.

Dodd was instrumental in the creation of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program – the nation’s primary afterschool program – and he serves as the Chairman of the bipartisan, bicameral Afterschool Caucus. Understanding how critical a college education has become, Dodd is a leader in the fight to make college more affordable for families. Dodd authored legislation to increase the amount of an individual Pell Grant – one of the most effective grant programs for well-qualified, potential college students. He has also fought to reduce student debt and wrote legislation creating the CCAMPIS program to provide for and expand funding for high-quality child care at campus-based child care centers.

“We all need to understand that while children are 25 percent of our population, they are 100 percent of our future,” Dodd has said. “If America is going to face the challenges of the 21st century with boldness and optimism, we will need the best-educated generation in the history of our country.”

The Dodd Education Plan would:

* Reduce the cost of college student loans, raise the Pell Grant and provide an opportunity for free community college to every American.
* Ensure that all Americans have access to a world-class public education.
* Reform No Child Left Behind to realize the promise of strengthening and supporting every public school.
* Ensure that every American graduates from high school college- and workforce-ready.

"A bold, detailed, and serious plan. Dodd's education plan reflects years of experience as someone who both delivers and understands the complexity of children's issues. Dodd's education plan is a mix of pragmatism and liberalism. It's quintessential Chris Dodd," said Michael Dannenberg, Director of Education Policy Program, New America Foundation of Sen. Dodd’s proposal. You can read more at http://chrisdodd.com/issues/education.
