New Mexico Governor Richardson Lowers Flags in Honor of Army Sergeant Steven Ganczewski

Sgt. Ganczewski was awarded the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and a Meritorious Service Medal posthumously

November 28, 2007 -- SANTA FE – New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of United States Army Sergeant Steven Ganczewski, 22, who lost his life while serving his country in Balad, Iraq, on Friday, November 16, 2007.

Sgt. Ganczewski was born in Albuquerque and later moved to Niagara Falls. He graduated from Niagara Fall High School in 2003 and entered the Army after graduation.

He was on his fifth tour of duty in war zones – Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sergeant Ganczewski was an Army Ranger and assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning in Georgia.

Sgt. Ganczewski is survived by his wife, Rachel and their two year old daughter, Makalya;

his father, Mark;

his mother, Maria;

and his brother, Christopher.

In honor of Sgt. Ganczewski’s sacrifice, Governor Richardson signed an Executive Order directing that flags be flown at half-staff from Thursday, November 29, 2007 through sundown on Friday November 30, 2007.

FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF STAFF IN HONOR AND MOURNING OF SERGEANT STEVEN C. GANCZEWSKI

WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant Steven C. Ganczewski, age 22, tragically lost his life while serving in Iraq on Friday, November 16, 2007;

WHEREAS, Sergeant Steven C. Ganczewski was born in Albuquerque and moved to Niagara Falls with his family in 1987. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 2003, while attending school he was also a member of the First Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol at the Niagara Falls Air Base from 1998 until 2003;

WHEREAS, Sergeant Steven C. Ganczewski was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, GA. He was currently on his fifth tour of duty, four of which were in Iraq and one in Afghanistan;

WHEREAS, Sergeant Steven C. Ganczewski is survived by his wife, Rachel N.

(Robydek) Ganczewski, his daughter, Makayla, his parents, Mark J. and Maria C. (DelMar) Ganczewski, his brother, Christopher D. Ganczewski, his maternal grandparents, Nilo and Ofelia DelMar and his paternal grandmother, Kathleen Ganczewski ;

and WHEREAS, Sergeant Steven C. Ganczewski dedicated his life to serving his country and will always be remembered for his bravery and patriotism.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Governor Bill Richardson, Governor of the State of New Mexico, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the Laws of the State of New Mexico, do hereby order that all flags be flown at half-staff from Thursday, November 29, 2007, until sundown on Friday, November 30, 2007, in honor and mourning of United States Army Sergeant Steven C. Ganczewski. The thoughts and prayers of the people of New Mexico go out to his family as well as a heartfelt thank you for his courageous service.
