Influenza Season Arrives in Maine

According to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Maine Center for Disease control, influenza season has begun in Maine.

November 30, 2007 -- AUGUSTA - According to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Maine Center for Disease control, influenza season has begun in Maine.

“We have had a laboratory-confirmed case of Influenza A this week,” announced Dora Anne Mills, MD, MPH, Director of the Maine CDC/DHHS. “Now that we know flu season is here, it is very important that we all heed the three basic guidelines of covering coughs and sneezes; washing hands frequently; and staying home if we’re ill, particularly with a fever.”

It is not too late to obtain a flu shot and influenza vaccine is available throughout much of the state, Mills said. The flu shot is especially for those ages 50 and over, under age 6, or any person with a chronic disease or who is pregnant. Those who desire a flu shot should call their local health care providers, hospitals or visiting nurses’ associations to determine vaccine availability.

“Good hygiene and getting a flu shot should help Maine to have a healthy winter,” concluded Dr. Mills.
