Rev. Jackson Calls for Gun Restrictions After NFL Star Sean Taylor’s Shooting Death
CHICAGO (November 27, 2007) -- Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, is extending his condolences to the family of Sean Taylor, the Washington Redskins football family and the National Football League.
“The loss of life from a senseless act of gun violence is a tragedy,” says Rev. Jackson. “Sean Taylor was a father, brother, teammate, friend to many and a loving son. He will be greatly missed.”
Mr. Taylor died early this morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami after being shot on Monday during an apparent home invasion.
Rev. Jackson has devoted much of the past year fighting for stricter gun laws and a renewal of the Brady bill, banning assault weapons and restricting the sell of other firearms. He now calls on Taylor’s former teammates from the University of Miami and NFL to join in this fight to save our loved ones from guns.
“Professional athletes have never known this level of endangerment,” Rev. Jackson said. “This is the struggle of this generation. We will be praying for new laws that will protect lives and the well-being of all.”
Gun violence has stricken communities across the country affecting everyone from small children to star athletes. We encourage the entire NFL Players Association and the NFL to stand with the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in its effort to end the senseless loss of life.
