Massachusetts AG Announces The Release Of Consumer Protection Brochures
November 26, 2007 -- BOSTON – In an effort to better inform the residents of the Commonwealth, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office has made available a series of consumer guides designed to educate the public of their rights under the Consumer Protection Act.
Residents of the Commonwealth enter into agreements, interact with retailers, and make credit based decisions everyday,” said Attorney General Coakley. “It is important that the citizens of Massachusetts are aware of their rights as consumers as well the proper steps to take if they encounter problems.”
The consumer based publications titled: The Attorney General’s Guide to Retail Rights, The Attorney General’s Guide to Consumer Credit, and The Attorney General’s Guide to Landlord/Tenant Rights outline topics from day to day purchases and credit management to understanding rental agreements. Each guide provides definitions of commonly used consumer terms and legal statute citations under Massachusetts General Law. In addition to the consumer guide books, much of the information has been condensed and organized in a series of factsheets for quick reference and easy reproduction. Titled: Credit Card Billing Rights for Consumers, Boost Your Credit I.Q., Fair Debt Collection, Fair Credit Reporting, Guide to Gift Cards and Certificates, Payments Related to Tenancy and Renting an Apartment in Massachusetts, the factsheets highlight specific situations and issues that are of common concern to many consumers. Additional resources and agencies are listed in both the consumer guidebooks and factsheets to aid consumers in filing complaints or obtaining area specific information.
The Attorney General’s consumer guides are viewable to all citizens of the Commonwealth via their local city or town clerks office, local public libraries, and legislators’ offices. Online versions of the guides are also available through the Attorney General’s website, www.mass.gov/ago.
