11/18/2007 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement to congratulate Jimmie Johnson, a native of El Cajon, California, on winning the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series championship:

“On behalf of all Californians, I congratulate Jimmie Johnson on winning the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series championship, stock-car racing’s highest achievement, for the second year in a row. Jimmie’s unparalleled talent and determination epitomize the Golden State’s championship spirit.

“It was particularly exciting to see this year’s championship come down to a fierce battle between two Californians, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, another local legend who was born in Vallejo. California is proud to be home to so many world-class athletes who compete and triumph at the highest levels of sport.”

Johnson donated all of his winnings from his October 28th race victory to the victims of the Southern California wildfires. Additionally, his Jimmie Johnson Foundation recently raised $500,000 for the construction of new Habitat for Humanity homes in the San Diego region.

One of Johnson's biggest victories this year came at the California Speedway in Fontana at the Sharp AQUOS 500 on September 2nd.
