Michigan farmers now eligible for low-interest emergency loans

November 14, 2007 -- WASHINGTON – Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., today made the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s announcement that all 83 counties in Michigan have been designated a disaster area due to losses resulting from a severe drought that began in April:

"Agriculture is vital to Michigan’s economic well-being, and when we are hit with severe weather and droughts it can be devastating to local farmers and the economy as a whole,” said Levin. “The USDA disaster designation is an acknowledgement of the problems this drought has caused and allows farmers to be considered for low-interest emergency loans from the Farm Service Agency (FSA). I encourage all farmers to consult with their local FSA office or go online to learn whether they are eligible for these loans and I am hopeful that the assistance will help our agricultural industry to recover and minimize the long-term effects.”
