November 13, 2007 -- WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement after the President vetoed the bipartisan, Senate passed, Labor, Health, Human Services and Education Appropriations bill.

“On the day after Veteran's Day, the President has vetoed a bill to fund health and education programs that would have also provided $23.6 million for the 400,000 homeless veterans in the United States.”

“The Senate passed this bipartisan bill last week in order to promote educational excellence, build a strong healthcare system, and assist our nation's veterans. Members on both sides of the aisle saw this bill as an important investment that will pay real dividends for America's families and their future.”

“This bill also includes millions of dollars in funding for Illinois schools and health centers. An important provision involving Impact Aid will protect schools serving Great Lakes Naval Base from losing their status and will help ensure that the children of Navy families have access to the best educational opportunities.”
